Servers Race Up Steep Webster Street Carrying Trays Of Drinks In Waiters Race
By Bay City News
There's the Air Guitar World Championship, the World Pea Shooting Championships - and in San Francisco, there's the Waiters Race.
Coming up this Sunday, the race is a highlight of the Union Street Festival. Teams of servers race up steep Webster Street carrying a tray with full glasses of drinks.
The race starts at noon Sunday at Webster and Union streets.
Teams of three race 100 feet up and down the street with a serving tray and drink in a relay format. Each teammate will add a drink to their serving tray. The last relay teammate will have three drinks on their tray.
The team that completes the race fastest can proceed to the next heat and have the chance to take home the title.
This is obviously not a race for the tipsy. However, the first-place winner does get three magnums of Underwood wine, along with a trophy, $500 cash and gift certificates.
If the Waiters Race isn't your cup of tea, or glass of wine, there's lots more at the 45th Annual Union Street Festival h on Union Street between Gough and Fillmore streets Saturday and Sunday. There's entertainment and music, artisan and craft vendors and food and drink vendors as well.
