One of the first things to consider when shopping for the best oversized cutting boards is the size of your chosen design. While most traditional cutting boards measure around 10 x 14 inches, all the boards we considered for our list were at least 20 inches long. Many boards were also fairly hefty — especially the wooden picks — with the heaviest weighing 15 pounds. That said, weight isn’t a factor for everyone, and you can find great oversized cutting boards made from plastic (like the OXO option on our list) that don’t weigh much at all.
The material of your cutting board is another major consideration when shopping for an oversized option. Many chefs prefer a wooden cutting board, primarily for its antimicrobial properties and gentle “give” on knives. That said, a case can be made for having a plastic cutting board in your arsenal since most can be tossed into the dishwasher.
Wooden cutting boards require a bit of maintenance to stay in tip-top shape. As you shop for a board for your home, read the care instructions. Most are not dishwasher safe, and many oversized wooden cutting boards necessitate regular oiling or waxing to keep them from looking dull, drying out, or cracking.

Though it made for an interesting design feature, we didn’t feel it impacted the board’s performance. Shape aside, this board performed well in our testing, offering plenty of surface area for meal prep. It did show more knife marks than other boards we tested, which led us to dock it a few points.
Hayate Yoshihiro Hi-Soft High-Performance Cutting Board ($130 at Amazon)Unlike the many wooden cutting board designs that made our list, this oversized board is made of a unique synthetic material designed to minimize stress on your hand and your blade as you slice and dice. We loved how easy this piece was to carry about the kitchen with its lightweight design and integrated handle. It also responded well to daily use, rarely showing significant damage from knives or other cutlery. The main downfall? This board is expensive, so it’s best for home chefs with equally expensive knives who want to protect their investment.
Our goal is always to bring you the best kitchen products which means we, unfortunately, had to leave some oversized cutting boards on the chopping block. Several pieces — including Wustof’s TPU Cutting Board and Material’s Angled Board — didn’t earn high enough marks on all our criteria, either because they didn’t offer enough surface area on which to prep, were too slippery on the countertop when chopping, or held onto stains and odors after washing.
